What it is
Lip fillers are injectable hyaluronic acid gels that add small amounts of volume, refine the lip border, and soften the fine vertical lines above the mouth. The aim is balance — a shape that suits your face and your own lip anatomy — rather than a bigger mouth.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule the skin already makes, and it binds many times its own weight in water. That is why the gel adds volume and hydration at the same time, and why the body breaks it down gradually over months instead of leaving it in place.
Lips thin for two different reasons. Some people simply start with little vermilion or a flat cupid’s bow; in others the fat and collagen around the mouth thin with age, so volume drops, fine vertical lines appear above the lip — the perioral lines often called smoker’s lines — and the corners of the mouth turn down. Which of the two applies decides whether filler is the right tool at all.
Most patients are in their late 20s to 50s and want either a little restored fullness or cleaner definition along the lip edge. A natural result usually takes between 0.5 ml and 1 ml.
Techniques we use
We advance the needle along the lip and lay a thin line of filler as it withdraws. It is the steady, well-established way to add even volume through the body of the lip without leaving lumps.
Filler is placed vertically from the wet-dry border outward, so the lip lifts upward rather than pushing forward into the protruding profile people call duck lips. From the side the profile stays flat, with more height and a defined cupid's bow.
Small, precise deposits along the vermilion border sharpen the outline and reduce lipstick bleeding into fine lines. We often pair it with a little volume in the body of the lip.
A blunt-tip cannula enters through a single point and spreads filler with less trauma to the vessels beneath. It usually means less bruising and swelling than needle-only work.
Volume is spread evenly through the body of both lips rather than concentrated at one point, holding the upper and lower lip near a 1:1.6 ratio. It suits patients who want unmistakable fullness without altering the shape they already have, so the result reads soft rather than sculpted.
Product is concentrated in the central third of each lip and tapered toward the corners, so the middle lifts and the mouth looks rounder and shorter. It suits narrow or evenly thin lips, where adding volume along the whole length would only make the mouth look wider.
Firm filler is placed along the two philtral columns running down from the nose and through the double curve at the centre of the upper lip. It answers a blurred or flat cupid’s bow — a framing problem rather than a volume one — and gives the lip visible height in the middle without adding projection.
The surgical alternative for permanent volume. Under local anaesthesia, small incisions at each corner of the mouth open a narrow tunnel, and a soft implant is placed beneath the lip fat before the incisions are stitched closed — about 30 minutes, home the same day. It suits patients who like their filler result and no longer want repeat sessions.
A short surgical procedure that removes a bullhorn-shaped strip of skin from directly under the base of the nose — hence its other name, the subnasal bullhorn lift — so the lip rolls upward and shows slightly more of the front teeth. It is the right tool when the issue is a long upper lip rather than thin lips — a proportion filler cannot correct. The result is permanent.
Inside the appointment
Assessment and marking
Before any product is drawn up, your lips are assessed at rest, smiling and in profile, and the areas where volume is genuinely missing are marked. The plan agreed on video before you travelled is confirmed against what your own anatomy will carry.
Topical numbing
Anaesthetic cream sits on the lips for around 20 minutes. Most modern fillers also carry lidocaine, so a dental block is rarely needed and what you feel is pressure rather than sharp pain.
Filler placed in small increments
Hyaluronic acid is deposited a little at a time through a fine needle or a blunt cannula, working from one side to the other. Building the volume in stages — rather than emptying the syringe in a single pass — is what keeps the result even and lets the shape be judged as it forms.
Moulding and symmetry check
Between passes you are sat upright and the filler is moulded by hand, with both sides compared at rest and in movement. Correcting a small asymmetry now is far easier than adjusting it once the product has integrated.
Follow-up at 48–72 hours
You go home the same session, and we see you again two to three days later once the first wave of swelling has dropped. That visit is where any genuine unevenness is picked up — before you fly home, not after.
Recovery, week by week
- Same day
Expect immediate swelling, mild tenderness, and possibly pinpoint bruising at the injection sites. Lips will look fuller than the final result — this is normal and settles quickly. A wrapped ice pack held on gently for about 10 minutes each hour on the first day helps ease swelling and mild soreness.
- Days 1–2
Leave strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and very hot showers for at least 48 hours — heat and raised blood pressure make swelling and bruising worse. Sleep with your head slightly raised, and avoid pressing on the lips or drinking through a straw.
- Day 3
Most of the early swelling has come down. Any bruises are at their most visible now and can be covered with makeup from day two onward. Through the first five days keep off straws, cigarettes, very hot drinks and heavy lip products — heat and pressure can shift soft filler before it has integrated.
- Week 1
Lips feel softer and look more natural. Small lumps from the injections are usually resolving as the filler integrates.
- Week 2
The final shape and texture are visible. This is the right point to assess the result and arrange a small top-up if one is needed.
How to prepare
- Stop blood thinners, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E for 5–7 days before your appointment.
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours beforehand to limit bruising.
- Tell us about any history of cold sores, so antiviral cover can be prescribed in advance.
- Leave at least 2 weeks between fillers and any major event, so early swelling has time to settle.
- Arrive with clean lips — no lipstick or balm — and well hydrated.
Risks

Before you fly
You speak with the surgeon before you book anything, so the plan — volume, technique, and what filler can and cannot do — is agreed before you travel. The preparation steps above apply unchanged. Many nationalities enter Turkey visa-free or on an e-Visa for a short stay, but confirm your own country's requirement before booking.

Frequently asked
Will my lips look obviously done?
Not at conservative volumes. Working with 0.5–1 ml, we aim for proportion rather than size, and most people around you will not pinpoint what changed — only that you look more rested.
How long do lip fillers last?
Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last 6 to 12 months, depending on the product and your metabolism. The lips are an active area, so they break down filler faster than the cheeks or jawline.
Does it hurt?
Topical numbing cream is applied first, and most modern fillers already contain lidocaine. You will feel pressure and a light pinching or stinging rather than sharp pain, and the appointment itself takes about 15–30 minutes. Afterwards the lips feel tight and tender rather than painful — mostly through the first 24 to 48 hours — and a wrapped ice pack is usually all that is needed.
I can feel small lumps in my lips — is that normal?
Yes, in the first seven to ten days. Firm spots at that stage are usually localised swelling or a pocket of product that has not yet spread, and they soften on their own as the filler integrates — only massage them if we ask you to. A lump still there at two weeks is real rather than swelling, and it can be smoothed or partly dissolved at a short follow-up.
Can lip filler be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, usually within 24–48 hours. It is also the emergency treatment for a vascular complication.
How much filler do I actually need?
First-timers usually start with 0.5 ml to 1 ml. If you want a more pronounced change, it is safer and more natural to build up over two sessions a few weeks apart than to do it all at once.

The FDA also advises against dermal fillers during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Smoking does not rule you out, but it slows healing and can shorten how long results last — share your full medical history at the consultation.
