While an aesthetic appearance is gained by correcting the shape irregularities on the nose with a rhinoplasty surgery, problems related to breathing can also be corrected within the same operation. While the excess nasal hump needs to be decreased for some noses; some noses can be too short while others are too long. The aim is to achieve an aesthetically pleasing nose that looks natural and is in harmony with the other parts of the face such as forehead, chin and cheekbones.
For closed rhinoplasty, cuts are made on the nostrils. This approach is widely used for the patients who need smaller arrangements to get the desired improvements on their nose structure. The advantage of closed rhinoplasty is that there is no visible scarring following the surgery.
For an “open” rhinoplasty, a small cut is made under the nostrils. This approach allows the surgeon to reach the nose structure easier in order to give the nose the desired shape. The scars that appear are hidden inside the natural lines on the nose and they are ensured not to draw attention as much as possible.
Tiplasty means reshaping rather than cutting techniques. As you can imagine, the aim of tiplasty is solely reshaping the tip of the nose without affecting other nose structures. Aesthetic surgeon may have open or closed perspective for tiplasty.

Is rhinoplasty without surgery possible?
A skilled plastic surgeon may help straighten the lumps that occurred because of impact, reshape the tip of the nose and improve the symmetry of the nose by strategically injecting the filler material in certain points in the nose.
The results are temporary, but this non-surgical operation can be a low cost method for the patients to try rhinoplasty before having the permanent changes that are possible to get with surgical rhinoplasty.
Prior to Rhinoplasty
There are a few steps the patients can follow prior to rhinoplasty in order to accelerate the recovery of patients, minimize the discomfort and decrease risks of complications.
Having a healthy diet is important for patients during the weeks before any surgical procedure. Having a healthy diet will accelerate recovery and minimize the risk of infection. Individuals should especially have a lot of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and fat-free protein.
Patients should inform their doctors about every medicine they are currently using while getting ready for rhinoplasty. Some medicine may cause problems before or after surgery. The doctor may make the patient temporarily stop taking a medicine, or suggest a safer alternative. Your doctor will inform you about which medications you should certainly avoid.
Tobacco use slows down the blood flow in the body. Because oxygen cannot reach the incision areas quickly, smokers may face longer periods for recovery, higher risk of infection and negative scars. You should stop smoking at least 2 weeks before the operation.
Patients should stop eating certain food and supplements that will slow down recovery and cause surgical complications. Patients should especially avoid vitamin E supplements, ginger, ginkgo and ginseng.
Talk to your Doctor
Some homeopathic and herbal supplements may cause complications with anesthesia, so patients should consult their doctors before taking additional food.
Many doctors suggest their patients not to drink alcoholic beverages because alcohol may affect the liver’s ability to metabolize.
Rhinoplasty surgery lasts 1-2 hours depending on the surgeon’s technique and the condition of the patient. We listed below the common steps in rhinoplasty.
The procedure changes for every patient because there are many types of rhinoplasty and many different aims to achieve with treatment. However, there are certain common steps in every procedure that aims to reshape the nose. Anesthesia specialists use one of the two sedation methods for rhinoplasty: General anesthesia: General anesthesia given through a mask or IV makes the patients completely fall asleep.
The doctor numbs your face with local anesthesia and applies a strong intravenous sedative. The patient experiences a “twilight sleep” and remembers very little when the medicine wears off. The doctor works with the patient to determine which type of anesthesia is the best for their needs. Patients do not feel discomfort with either method. However, some patients may be less concerned when they know they will be completely asleep.
After anesthesia, the surgeon makes small cuts on the nostrils. Afterwards, the surgeon carefully lifts the skin in order to reach the underlying bone and cartilage. The surgeon can remove the tissues when needed. Typically, the doctor uses conservative methods to minimize the effect to the tissues around the nose. When reshaping procedure is done, the doctor puts the skin on the new contours and closes down the cuts.
After rhinoplasty, it is important to protect the changes on the nose tissue during the first few days. After closing the cuts that are made during surgery, the surgeon places a splint so that it helps protect the shape of the nose. In certain situations, your doctor may place gauze or nose tampon in the nostrils. This material will help decrease the bleeding and keep the septum in place. Gauze may cause some discomfort. However, it is usually removed in a few days after surgery. It may be used in long term to protect the results of surgery.
What Should I Expect?
Mild or medium pain and discomfort should be expected after rhinoplasty. This is a situation that can easily be controlled with oral medicine. Discomfort and pain should start decreasing in 72 hours after surgery. After this period, you are suggested to contact your doctor if there is a significant increase in pain.
Bruising and swelling after rhinoplasty is not uncommon. These symptoms usually worsen in the second day after the surgery, and then improve regulary after that; this is normal. The amount of bruising changes majorly from patient to patient. If only the semptom and / or tip of the nose is performed on, mild bruising is normally expected.Get an Appointment
Rhinoplasty surgery under general anesthesia is usually performed in the way that you will be discharged within the same day, but in some cases intravenous sedation and local anesthesia may be suitable. Tampon may be used after the procedure. This helps support your newly shaped nose and it prevents it from being contacted by accident. The tampon is usually removed in the first week after rhinoplasty. Your surgeon will give you painkillers to help minimize discomfort during your first recovery.
Many patients experience bruising and swelling during the first 1-2 weeks. At first, you may not be able to see the improvements that were done during rhinoplasty surgery. However, don’t worry – most of the bruising and swelling should disappear after the first 10 to 14 days.
Going Back to Work
Many patients feel ready to go back to work or school after 1 or 2 weeks depending on the necessary level of activity. Many of the patients can continue activities that do not involve contact after 3 weeks.
People who have a rhinoplasty can see the improvements made by the surgeon when bruising and swelling decreases, but it is normal to have mild swelling for up to a year. However, this is usually difficult for others to notice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Ideal Age for Rhinoplasty?
The earliest age to have rhinoplasty surgery is 13 for a female and 15 for a male. Still, it is ideal to wait until the bone and soft tissue structure of the face matures completely. It can be said that the most suitable age according to this is 19-20.
Which Food Should be Avoided After Rhinoplasty?
Try to eat soft and simple food especially during the first few days right after your rhinoplasty surgery. Continue drinking enough water and eat food that you know your body can digest. We suggest our patients to avoid salty, spicy food and food that are rich in sodium because salt is known to increase swelling.
How to Sleep After Rhinoplasty?
We suggest you to keep your head (nose) above your heart after rhinoplasty. This can usually be ensured with 3-4 pillows. You can place pillows in both sides in order to ease staying in this position. You can put things on both sides in order to help turn to your side or on your tummy.
How Can a Nose that Recovered Crookedly Be Corrected? (Secondary Rhinoplasty)
Crooked noses can be corrected with a secondary surgery. This can be performed as open reduction of nose muscle fracture due to trauma. If there is no history of trauma, it is considered as more of a cosmetic procedure and rhinoplasy deals with this situation. How a crooked nose can be improved depends where the crookedness is. This usually results from internal septum and correcting it may create a clearer appearance. Sometimes the bone on the outside should be rearranged and it should be broken under control. Lastly, if the deviated part is the cartilage, it can be improved with stitching techniques and other contouring techniques with an open rhinoplasty. Most of the nose deviations have different reasons and you should sit and discuss with your plastic surgeon in order to create a general treatment plan.
When can patients start doing heavy exercise after rhinpolasty?
After at least 3 weeks. Heavy lifting increases your blood pressure and especially the pressure on the face and nose area when you hold your breath. This may cause nose bleeding. Besides, if a weight falls on your nose in the first 3 weeks, it has a high risk of breaking your nose. It takes 3 weeks for your nose bones to recover sufficiently against mild trauma.
What Causes Nasal Hump?
Nasal hump is in the shape of a lump on nasal bridge. It usually results from genetics, but you may also see a bulge if you break your nose. The bone in the shape of dorsal hump is typically formed by a mix of bone and cartilage, the percentage is different for every patient. If the radix, the upper part of your nose near your eyes, is also deep, the hump may appear bigger. It is improve to find out the reason behind your hump in order to improve your profile. If it is excess cartilage and bone, surgery may fix these. If radium is too deep, a cartilage greft may be placed with surgery or a non-invasive rhinoplasty may be performed where a semi-permanent filling material can fill the depression and where the shape of the nose is flattened.
When will the Results of Rhinoplasty be Visible?
It takes up to a year or longer to see the final results of rhinoplasty.
Preview of the Results of Rhinoplasty
Thanks to modern technology, patients can have a picture of the results of rhinoplasty surgery. Digital visualization techniques ensure surgeons to have virtual 3 dimensional models of a patient and create their future appearance. Although the 3 dimensional model acts as a guide for the surgeon, there is no guarantee that the rhinoplasty will certainly get the same results.

Bruising and swelling is a normal part of recovery period of rhinoplasty. They depend on both surgical technique and on a variety of factors about the patient. Factors such as whether nose bones (osteotomies) were broken or not, the degree of dissection / rise of soft tissue through the bone-cartilaginous framework and whether the operation was performed as an open or closed one. Among the factors about the patients are age, thickness of skin, eating, bleeding tendencies / disorders and use of blood thinners.
Frankly, most of these variables are not in control of the patient; but the level of bruising and swelling may be minimized by following these suggestions: Your doctor will tell you which medications you should certainly avoid.
The nose undergoes very important changes between after the first two weeks and 12 weeks following rhinoplasty. Swelling disappears gradually in the first few months, and the appearance of the nose changes slowly. If the cast is removed after a week, the nose appears swollen. Swelling and bruising usually disappears towards the end of the second week, and that the nose underwent surgery becomes not easily noticeable by an ordinary person.
The patient sees their nose swollen or puffy for a few months. Most of the swelling will disappear in about 3-4 months, but it will look bigger in photos. It may take up to a year before the nose gets is final shape.
It is very common for rhinoplasty patients (in the first few weeks after surgery) to state that their upper lip is stiff and it is hard for them to smile. Fortunately, this recovers on its own in the first few weeks after the surgery because the swelling decreases. Be patient, your smile will become normal.
Avoid multivitamins / herbal supplements / tea that include high levels of Vitamin E, ginseng and ginkgo - these may increase your bleeding. If you have a history of bleeding or bruising easily, bleeding disorders or if you have a family member that has bleeding disorder, inform your doctor prior to the surgery.
The ice packs that will be applied on the cheeks during the first 48 hours may be helpful for these situations. You should absolutely avoid smoking. Herbal supplements such as bromelain, papaya extract and arnica may be helpful, but few studies proven their effectiveness. Being exposed to sun during the first few months after rhinoplasty may cause the skin over the nose become red or “spotty”. Besides, it is possible for you to have sunburns easily. The patients should wear sunscreen and / or wear a hat during the first few months after rhinoplasty in order to avoid the problems stated above.
Aesthetic Surgeries that can be Combined with Rhinoplasty
Many patients choose to have additional treatments at the same time with rhinoplasty because the nose has a very significant role on the face structure. In addition, because a recovery period is already going to be experienced, it is very logical to fit the recovery periods of other procedures in this period. These procedures help protect the balance of the face and give more apparent and more dramatic results. In most cases, it is safe to combine rhinoplasty with one or more additional treatments. In addition, patients should choose surgeons that are experienced in all areas of face plastic surgery for safety and to get good results.
Jaw augmentation and jaw reduction are treatment methods that are most commonly combined with rhinoplasty. A surgeon places a silicone implant through a cut right below the chin or in the mouth to perform a jaw augmentation procedure. For a jaw reduction surgery, the cuts are made in the same areas. Then, the surgeon reshapes the jaw and removes the milimetric jaw material to create a more aesthetically pleasing shape.
Many patients want to improve the area that circles the nose with a cheek augmentation while having an improved nose. We do this operation through two ways. Firstly, we suggest fat graft or dermal filling material. Your doctor removes the unwanted fat cells by using liposuction on another part of the body to apply fat graft. Then, the cells will purified and injected in different depths of the face for more apparent cheekbones and to have a younger appearance. While dermal fillers give volume to the face, they can increase the production of collagen in some cases. The results may take months and patients may have routine retouches.
Many patents choose to combine rhinoplasty with a face lift in order to get dramatic results and a younger general appearance. This procedure is used to especially remove the wrinkles around the eyes, cheeks, chin and mouth and treat sagging. There a few types of face lift and patients may choose middle, mini or smaller face lift methods to target their area of concern. The doctor lifts the face muscles through cuts that are carefully hidden, removes the fat residue and cleans the excess skin. Patients may look much younger after a face lift.
Similar to face surgery, brow lift surgery also removes sagging skin and reduces deep wrinkles. In addition, brow lifts especially target the forehead and the area between the brows. The doctor makes a cut along the hairline or on the crown of the head. Then, lifts the underlying muscles to reduce the frowning wrinkles, vertical wrinkles, sagging brows and hooded brows.
Blefaroplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Blefaroplasty or eyelid surgery is a perfect way to remove sagging eyelids and give the patients a younger appearance. The treatment may target upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. The doctors make small cuts on the lash line or on the eyelid crease and then lifts the muscles around it and removes the accumulated fat.

Nose Job - Rhinoplasty
What Is The Preoperative Process For Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty starts when the meeting is done and the patient is examined before the operation. Bone and cartilage structure of the nose, curvature in nose, the angle of forehead and lips with nose, the shape of the nose tip are of great importance. It is quite important to acknowledge the post-surgery expectations of the patient and to inform the patient clearly during the meeting.
Until one week before the rhinoplasty, the patient should not take aspirin or any other antiaggregants , should not drink herbal teas, should not smoke or should reduce smoking to 5 cigarettes per day and should not consume alcohol in the last 48 hours.
How Long Does The Operation Last?
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or a combination of local and sedation anesthesia. The operation lasts about an hour and half. The duration of the operation might be longer if the nose is traumatized, clearly deformed or hard to shape.
Does Rhinoplasty Leave Permanent Scars On Skin?
We perform rhinoplasty through a close surgery method in which all the cutting and shaping are done inside of the nose. Therefore, it leaves no scar on the skin.
How Is The Post-Surgical Process?
Patients do not need to stay at the hospital after the operation. In the first 6 hours, patients may feel dullness and a dull ache which is responsive to painkillers. They may experience a slight swelling and cyanosis, but they fade within a week. Small silicon splints which are placed into the nostrils are removed after 2-5 days. Skin-color splints, which are placed to prevent the nose from swelling and to preserve the nose shape, are removed after 5-7 days. Patients who had rhinoplasty may return their work and daily life after a week.
It may last for 2 to 6 months for the nose to take its final shape and for all the edemas to pass.
The key to success in rhinoplasty is the controlled behavior. The outcome is always satisfactory if you pay respect to the tissues and shape the nose by removing a sufficient amount of tissue.
